Budget-Savvy Ideas to Spruce Up Your Home Workspace

Article by: Vivek Mukherjee

Working from home requires a dedicated space that provides comfort and inspires productivity. Whether your home office is a corner of your den or a separate room, you can set up an attractive workspace that fits your needs and budget. Use these cost-friendly design tips from Mark Zarr to get you started.

Plan for Function

The nature of your job responsibilities should inform decisions about layout, furniture and decor. If much of your work is done using a laptop, you may opt for a slimmer desk. An artistic job may necessitate a larger surface space for drawing or spreading out supplies. No matter your role, your workspace setup should help you to diligently and efficiently perform work functions.

Nothing will bring your work functions to a halt like a broken air conditioner. A hot office makes for miserable working conditions, so if it’s time to have your HVAC system replaced, reach out to a local company to explore your options. AC units tend to last about 15–20 years. If yours is close to or even beyond that age, it’s time to get it replaced.

Focus on Ergonomics

The quality and positioning of your furniture are essential to preventing work-related pain and fatigue. Research shows office workers spend more than six hours per day in front of a computer. Heavy screen usage can cause neck and back pain, joint discomfort and eye strain. Ergonomics aims to design work environments that account for employees’ needs, enabling them to complete tasks safely and comfortably.

Choose a chair that adequately supports your back and posture. Another option is a sit-stand desk which allows you to alternate positions for greater flexibility.

Layer Light Sources

If possible, arrange your desk at a right angle from the window. Filter in natural light, which is found to boost mood and productivity. Use blinds or curtains to adjust light levels or correct glares. Position floor lamps to provide an ambient glow. For more focused lighting, utilize a desk lamp.

Dress Up the Walls

Add dimension to your space with wall decor. Hang eye-catching artwork, create a gallery wall or make a statement with wallpaper. Peel-and-stick wallpaper is a popular choice as it’s easy to apply and remove, and you won’t leave residue on your walls.

Add Some Greenery

Plants not only add to the visual appeal of a room, but many species also have air-purifying qualities that eliminate or reduce toxins and allergens. Sprinkle the room with low-maintenance varieties like dracaena that give you all of the pluses without any fusses.

You’ll want to ensure that your plants can thrive in a healthy environment. Look into home products like a well-reviewed home humidifier to help your plants out. There are several products out there, so it’s wise to read unbiased reviews before making a purchase.

Keep It Clutter-Free

Everything you need for work should be easily accessible without cluttering up valuable workspace or creating a disorganized look. Be resourceful when it comes to storage solutions by working with what you already have. Repurpose decorative baskets and bins to house small office supplies. Refresh a drab filing cabinet with a new coat of paint and some modern hardware.

Go vertical where space is at a premium. Hang a framed pinboard near your desk for important reminders. Install shelving and post your calendar.

Include a Personal Touch

Your working space should promote wellness and inspire you to focus, work and grow. Transform your home office into a happy and motivating place by using meaningful adornments, such as:

  • Family photos
  • Water features
  • Travel mementos
  • Your children’s artwork
  • Inspirational quotes

A well-designed home workspace is achievable without spending tons of your hard-earned income. Stick with elements that are both functional and stylish such as decorative storage baskets and air-purifying plants. With a little creativity, you can make affordable upgrades that significantly enhance your work-at-home environment.
